Cookie policy

Draft for review. This policy has not yet been reviewed by legal counsel and is not in force. Passages in [square brackets] still need to be completed.
This policy covers the Friends of School marketing site. Schools' own sites and the app are covered separately by the school's arrangements.
Why there is no cookie banner here
This marketing site sets no cookies at all. There is no analytics, no advertising pixel, and no third-party tracker, so there is nothing to ask your permission for. A banner would be theatre.
If we ever add analytics, we will ask first, and this policy will change before it happens rather than after.
What we do store on your device
Two small values are saved in your browser's local storage when you use the display controls in the corner of the page:
- fos-theme: whether you chose light or dark
- fos-text: the text size you chose
Why that is not tracking
These values never leave your device. They are not sent to us, they contain no identifier, and they cannot be used to recognise you across sites or visits from another device. They exist so the page looks the way you set it the next time you open it.
Under UK PECR and equivalent rules elsewhere, storage that is strictly necessary to deliver a setting the reader explicitly asked for does not require consent.
Clearing them
Clearing site data for this domain in your browser removes both values, and the page returns to following your device's light or dark setting. Using the site in a private window stores nothing beyond that window.
The app and school sites
The Friends of School app and hosted school sites use a session cookie to keep you signed in. That cookie is strictly necessary: without it, you would be signed out on every page. It is described in the privacy policy along with everything else the school holds.
